Thank you dropping by to check out our Travelpro Maxlite 5- Softside Expandable Spinner Wheel luggage review. In this review, we have tested this lugguage and have some important guidelines for you that you don’t want to miss.

To save money when shopping for a luggage bag, you may need to sacrifice a few things like durability and features since that’s where most price hike comes from.

You should also skip the premium brands for obvious reasons. In short, you are basically forced to only shop from not so well-known brands if you truly want to save money.

That being said, there are still not-so-obvious ways to secure a good luggage bag for cheap. You can do that by searching for deals online. Companies, even the bigger brands, usually do firehouse sales every quarter to clear out their inventory.

This is where you can spot great deals. One caveat of searching for deals is most of them come in like 2-in-1, 3-in-1, buy 1 take 1, and other similar deals.

In this review, we are going to look into a package deal that is available in 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 bundles. The name of the item is Travelpro Maxlite 5-Softside Expandable Spinner Wheel Luggage, Azure Blue, 2-Piece Set (21/25).

Travelpro is now considered a direct competitor of Samsonite which should speak to its quality. To be remarked as a direct competitor to arguably the best luggage makers in the world is a high praise, in my opinion.

My main reason for choosing this bag to review is partly because of the brand. TravelPro is quickly becoming the go-to choice for many because of the quality of the bags they are putting out there. This is evident by them being one of the highest rated luggage brands on Amazon. It’s only fair to want to review an item from this great brand.

Pros & Cons of Travelpro Maxlite 5-Softside Expandable Spinner Wheel Luggage

To get a better sense of what the product has to offer, you need to compare the pros and cons. Obviously, the pros should outweigh the cons.

A good determining factor of the real value of an item is if the cons only contain some minor issues. In short, the cons should not have any major dealbreakers in it or it would be deemed a waste of money.

This particular item isn’t exactly cheap so I am also going to factor that into this review. As a rule of thumb, you expect more expensive items to be better. That’s just the way it is. Let’s see how this product fare.

2-Piece Bags In One Package

This particular deal is for 2 bags but you can increase that to 3 bags if you want to. If you don’t need the additional bag, you can always buy each bag separately.

They would be more expensive, of course, as compared to if you bought them inclusively.

This item is for the 21/25 set which offers a good combo for travel. The 21” is perfect for carry on, and the 25” is great for checked in if you don’t plan of bringing plenty of items on board.

If you want a bigger bag, you can opt to the 21/29 deal.

If you want more assortment for your bag sizes, you can also choose the 3-in-1 deal which gives you 21/25/29 bags.

2” Expansion For Maximum Storage Capability

This is one of those features that you usually only see on softside luggage bags. The reason for this is softside bags can expand easily because of the material.

Fabric is stretchable unlike hard plastics.

For hardside bags, the outer shell is built like a monolith which does not allow for expansion. The benefit of that is it is significantly more solid compared to softside luggage bags.

The main downside is it can’t be expanded. There have been a handful of hardside that offers expansion but those are usually priced so high that it’s wiser to just get the softside counterpart instead.

Lightweight But Durable

Their 21” luggage bag only weighs at an impressive 5.09 lbs. Anything under 6 lbs for a carry on bag is considered lightweight. This was made possible because of the choice of materials.

For hardcase luggage bags, it’s a bit harder to get under the 6 lbs cutoff but it’s possible. You would have to pay premium though.

The 25” measure at 7.3 lbs. Not nearly as impressive as the carry on bag but it is still relatively lightweight. The 29” comes in at around 8.5 lbs. Still a good weight for a luggage this size.

Spinner Wheel Design

Ever since I tried a spinner wheel design, I was instantly a convert. I couldn’t imagine myself owning a non-spinner luggage.

The spinner/multi-directional wheel design is just so much more convenient. You can move the luggage in upright position which makes lugging it around a breeze.

This is a stark contrast the style of the old inline wheels, which needed for you to tip the bag over before you can wheel it around.

The only downside I can think of when you opt for the spinner luggage is the added weight but it’s negligible anyway. It’s just a much better design, in my opinion.

Fully Lined Interior With Extra Straps And Pockets

You will see plenty of fastener and hidden pockets and storage inside the bag. This is perfect if you are a kind of traveler who wants everything to be neat. This bag makes organizing much easier.

It even has a small storage space for your personal belongings like toiletries and personal effects that you can’t put on your carry on bag. It’s just a well-designed bag overall.

Limited Lifetime Coverage Plus Trusted Companion Promise

This type of warranty covers the usual damages but what takes this over the top is it covers the cost of repairs for damages resulting from airline neglect for 1 year.

Sure, it’s only for one year but it is better than nothing. Many of its direct competitors don’t even bother adding airline damage warranty.

No Built-In Locking Mechanism

This bag is one of the more expensive ones, relative to the 2-in-1 deals I’ve been reviewing in this website. As such, I sort of expect plenty of features that you won’t see on the cheaper brand and models. That’s not the case though.

There are some key features that are missing from this bag which is quite disappointing.

For instance, it doesn’t have a built-in locking mechanism which is something I expect from a bag of this price point. A built-in TSA lock is one of the features that you will find very useful.

Without an integrated lock, you are almost forced into buying a separate lock and key which adds to the already above-average price of this item.

A Bit of a Stain Magnet

The material they used for this bag is heavy duty nylon. It is very different from the more popular and more expensive polyester fabric that is used for premium bags.

One key downside to this material is it stains easily, relative to polyester. It’s easy enough to clean but for darker stains, you will need deep cleaning.

In my experience, a fine brush and soap should be enough.

Also, the color you select affects how stain-resistant your bag is. Obviously, the lighter the color, the easier for the bag to stain. You can always use a luggage cover but those can easily become quite the hassle.

Quality Rating

When you think of getting a durable bag, you would almost always picture a hardside luggage bag because they just look the part.

Hardside luggage bags are made from hard materials so it’s easy to visualize their durability.

Surprisingly, that isn’t actually the case. Softside luggage bags are just as strong if not stronger than their hardside counterpart. It all depends on the brand and model. Depends on the craftsmanship, really.

Both of these material choices certainly have their pros and cons but you really can’t say which one is stronger. As I’ve said before, it all depends on the craftsmanship and how are you planning on using it.

That being said, I am satisfied with the quality of this TravelPro Maxlite 5 Softside Spinner Wheel Luggage Bag. I think it is fair to give this product a 4.5-star rating.

Size Rating

This bag is true to size. What I mean by that is you get the exact dimensions that’s written in the box. Here are the dimensions for all the bags in this product page:

Carry-On 19-Inch, 7.75 x 15.75 x 21.75 inches, 5.83 pounds

Carry-On 21-Inch, 9 x 14.5 x 23 inches, 5.09 pounds

Checked-Medium 25-Inch, 11.5 x 18.5 x 27 inches, 7.3 pounds

Checked-Large 29-Inch, 13 x 21 x 31 inches, 8.49 pounds

What’s great about this bag is there is a size for your exact needs. You have basically 4 options of varying sizes.

You can buy those independently but you will save money if you buy in package, 2-in-1 or 3-in-1. At the time of this writing, they don’t offer 4-in-1 deal. The item they do not include in any of their deals is the carry-on 19-inch model.

Because of the several sizing options, I’m inclined to give this an easy 5 stars.

Feature Rating

Don’t let the fabric materials fool you, this bag is made to last very long time. It is one of the most durable softside luggage bags I’ve reviewed, and that’s saying something considering that I’ve already reviewed the best of them.

This is definitely a good buy. Sure, it is missing a few features that you’d expect from this price point but what it lacks, it makes up for in terms of durability. 4.5 stars.

Brand Rating

This is the first time I’ve reviewed a TravelPro Bag but it certainly won’t be the last.

The biggest selling point of this brand is the price-to-quality ratio. This brand isn’t exactly cheap but it’s cheaper than its competitors, at least. Depending on the model, the price range is between mid to high.

One thing that differentiates this brand from the more expensive competitors is the length of the warranty.

This brand does offer lifetime warranties but those are reserved for their most expensive models. For their generic models, they usually just slap them with the usual 5-year warranty.

For reference, Samsonite offers 10-year warranties to a lifetime. Comparing this brand to Samsonite is actually fair comparison since they have practically the same features and price points.

If you’re a frequent traveler, you can never go wrong with TravelPro. In my opinion, their best offerings come in their mid-range product lineup, which is where the most value comes from.

If you are not concerned with the pricing and is willing to pay for more, there are better luggage brands out there. But in the mid to high range, TravelPro is king.

5 stars.

Final Verdict on Travelpro Maxlite 5-Softside Expandable Spinner Wheel Luggage

I’ve always been a fan of 2-in-1 deals. It’s a good way to save money and get more items in one go. One downside to this is you don’t have full control of what items are included in the deal. You can’t request specific combinations of bag when shopping for a package deal, which is a deliberate move from the company’s part.

The main reason why companies do these sorts of deals is they want to give the appearance of a discount, and discount means more sale. Another reason, which is actually pretty resourceful, is they want to package their slow-moving items to faster moving ones to clear their inventory. It’s a smart move if you think about it.

For this particular item, Travelpro Maxlite 5-Softside Expandable Spinner Wheel, I see no reason why I can’t recommend it to people. It’s one of the better deals out there. It’s not as cheap as other bags but it certainly makes up for it by being more durable than your average bag. I’d say that this bag belongs in the top 3 in terms of durability.

Now, as for its feature, they are pretty standard. There are certain key features that were missing but overall not a big deal. If you want more features, you can browse TravelPro’s Elite line which is basically the same as this bag albeit with more features.

To summarize, this TravelPro bag, while priced a bit higher than its competition, is one of best softside luggage bags you can buy on Amazon.
