Welcome to our DELSEY Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage Review! In this blogpost, we have tested DELSEY Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage and have specific guideline for you.

In today’s  review, we are going to do another in-depth review of one of the popular luggage products on Amazon. The name of the product is DELSEY Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels. This item is currently available in 10 different packages but for the sake of clarity, we are mostly going to focus on the 2-piece set (19” and 29”).

I may still write short reviews for the other package deals but it’s perfectly fine to assume that the quality of the other packages would be similar to the specific deal I am reviewing. They are basically the same items offered in different combinations so I might not even need to write about the other iterations.

This is a hardside luggage which means that it is enclosed in a hard shell which gives it a sturdier look compared to softside luggages (fabrics). There is still an ongoing debate of which type of bag is perfect –  hardside or softside. I won’t actually talk about that particular topic in-depth but might gloss over it since this is a hardside bag after all. That topic deserves an article of its own, to be honest.

Now, as for the reason why I chose this product to review, it’s partly because it’s a popular bag. Another thing that I also considered is the price. The package luggage deals that I usually review on this site are bargains. This particular product, not so much.

To give you an idea, the last 2-piece luggage deal I reviewed costs $140. And that was from one of my more expensive reviews, too. The usual prices of the bags I review are sub-$100. In comparison, this Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside costs around $250.

Let’s start.

Pros & Cons of DELSEY Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage

In my opinion, the best way to start a review a product after a brief introduction is to quickly dive into the pros and cons section. This is the part where you can balance the goods and the bads of a product. I’ve yet to see a product that doesn’t have a con. Every product, yes, even the best ones, have their cons. What makes a product great is if their pros can eclipse the cons easily.

That’s exactly what we are going to look for in here. Do the pros of this bag outweigh the cons? By how much? These are only a couple of questions that I will be answering in this article review.

10 Different Luggage Bag Combinations

While this review is mainly focused on this 2-piece set (19/29), it’s good to know that it’s available in 10 different combinations which are too many to mention. You can get the two bags separately. Or you can get an entirely different combination (21/25). As I’ve said, there’s 10 of them combinations. You can certainly find yourself a good set if look here.

The reason why I chose this set combination is it offers greater flexibility when you travel. If you don’t need to pack too much item for your trip, the 19” luggage bag is perfect. For international travels, the 29” would be ideal. This set offers a happy medium but if you want more options, this particular item is also available in (19/25/29).

Double Spinner Wheels

If you’ve been using inline wheels for a long time, you should definitely try out spinner wheels. During maybe my 10 years of travels, I’ve only used inline wheels. Not my own fault though. At the time, it was the only option available. Sure, there were spinner wheels but they very far and few in between. That’s a stark contrast to now where a good chunk of luggage bags has opted into using spinner wheels.

The main reason I put this in the pros is it’s just easier to move around spinners. It does not require as much effort compared to inline wheels. You don’t even have to incline the bag to move it. You can wheel it around in the upright position. Even if the bag is full, you certainly won’t feel it since the weight would be fully supported by the 4 wheels.

Integrated 3-dial TSA-accepted Combination Lock

This is the feature that I always look for when reviewing a bag. It’s not a popular feature but it’s probably one of the most useful add-ons there is. And I know I am not speaking for myself here when I say that this is one of those features that can sell a bag. It’s just a shame that not a lot of bags have it, especially in the lower range.

This item being in the medium to high range in terms of pricing, I sort of expected this feature here. Both the bags have this built-in lock, too, which is awesome. Another benefit to this feature is you no longer have to buy a separate lock for your luggage bag. It’s built right in. Very convenient.

Fully Lined Interior With Zippered Extra Compartments

This isn’t exactly a feature but more of a convenience kind of thing. I’d say that 99% of luggage bags have compartments but majority of those are just your run-of-the-mill 2 divider kind of compartments. I am not a fan of those, and it’s not just me. For one, they don’t provide nearly as much storage as I want to. More clearly, you won’t be able to separate items neatly when there aren’t any dividers inside the bag.

This bag has plenty of compartments that you can use to separate different articles of clothing. What’s even greater is some of the compartments have zippers.

If you look on their page, you will see that this bag has a cool gloss to it. It’s a shiny bag that certainly looks like it scratches easily. Contrary to what the shiny appearance would lead you to believe, this bag is actually scratch resistant. At least that’s what they tell their customers.

In my experience, scratch-resistant bags aren’t exactly 100% scratch-resistant. They will still collect scratches. The only difference is they won’t scratch nearly as much as your standard hardcase bag. This is still a good feature, don’t get me wrong. Just don’t expect it to remain glossy and shiny because it’s branded as scratch-resistant. Additionally, your mileage may vary depending on how you handle the bag.

Heavier Than Expected

These bags are heavy, relatively speaking, of course. The smaller bag (19”) weighs at a surprising 8.2 pounds. To give you a reference, some of the bags I’ve reviewed weigh only about half as much while being 2” bigger. I figure the weight has something to do with the quality of the bag. Even at first glance, this bag is solid. I looks and feel premium which I can’t say for some of the bags I’ve already reviewed.

As for the bigger bag (29”), it weighs 12.54 pounds. Not a surprising amount of weight but still hefty. Personally speaking, I would only consider a bag super lightweight if it’s sub-8 pounds for this size. I’ve seen bags of this size come in at 6 pounds which is mighty impressive.

This ‘negative’ isn’t exactly a dealbreaker given that you almost kind of expected them to weigh as much as they did given the solid craftsmanship. You also have to consider that these bags are full-on hardcase and not just semi-hardcase like a lot of bags are today.

Their Warranty Is A Bit Vague

This luggage set comes with a limited 10-year warranty but it varies. Some of the items in here only have 2 year warranties. I guess it depends on which item you are buying. In any case, it’s a bit confusing.

Take note that their warranty is “limited warranty” which opens it up to plenty of interpretation, mostly leaning to the side of the company. I’ve read complaints about the company not honoring the warranty because it isn’t explicitly covered the warranty card. From what I’ve read, they mostly just cover warranty defects and that’s it. As for the damage resulting from your use, unless you can prove 100% that it was a result of a manufacturing defect, they won’t cover it.

It Does Not Expand

This isn’t exactly surprising but it still worth a mention. The hardshell they chose for this product is very hard, maybe even too hard. It doesn’t offer much flexibility at all. Some manufacturers opt for hardshells that are a bit flexible to give some allowance for external forces. This item does not do that. The shell is really solid and that gets us to the last negative of this bag.

The Hardcase Shell Can Crack

As I’ve said above, they might’ve made this bag too solid. In my opinion, they should’ve opted for a shell that offers a bit of a stretch. This bag being so hard makes it prone to cracks. It’s brittle to the point that if it’s carrying its full capacity and you accidentally drop it on its side, the corner might shatter.

I’ve read reports of this on the page. To be fair, those complaints are very few and to be honest, you kind of expect some complaints amongst the users because it is such a popular bag. It currently has around ~4350 reviews which are overwhelmingly positive.

Quality Rating

This is a hardside bag which means that its external shell is made from a hardshell. The material they used for this is a bit too solid for my taste but it works, and works well it does. It’s probably one of the most rigid bags I’ve reviewed on here. One downside, of course, is it is heavier than it needs to be.

That being said, this bag being a hardside does not mean that it is immune from all kinds of damage. It can still break but it breaks differently. For softside luggage bags, the usual damages are results of cuts or loose lining. For hardside bags, cracking and shattering are the most common types of damage.

Still, I am impressed with the quality of this bag. I usually just give my ratings with 0.5 star increments but I don’t think 4.5 stars is fair for this bag. Just this one time, I will give this bag a solid 4.75 stars.

Size Rating

This bag is true to size. Here the exact measurements for each bag.

19” Carry-On – 19 x 13 x 9.5 inches, 8.2 lbs

21” Checked-Size – 21 x 14.5 x 10 inches, 8.4 lbs

25” Checked-Size – 25 x 17.5 x 11.5 inches, 10.2 lbs

29” Checked-Size – 19.5 x 12.5 x 29 inches, 12.5 lbs

For some, these bags are the perfect sizes, in my opinion. Whatever your use is, you sure can find a bag that is the right size for you. 5 stars.

Brand Rating

This is the first time I’ve reviewed a Delsey Bag but it certainly won’t be the last.

Most people when asked about the best brand of luggage would answer Samsonite, and they are right. Samsonite has been the #1 luggage makers in the world for quite some time now. Now, you might be wondering why I mentioned Samsonite in this Delsey bag review. That’s because Delsey is now considered a direct competition for Samsonite.

This should tell you about the quality work of this company. To be labeled as a direct competitor to the #1 luggage makers in the world is surely a praise. Speaking of craftsmanship and quality, I’d say that they are on par with Samsonite. Same with the features. All the features of Samsonite bags can also be seen on Delsey Bags.

So, what are their difference, exactly? For one, Samsonite is the brand to beat, and one that is popular. It’s hard to go up against the reigning champ but Delsey is certainly trying and they have my respect for that.

Overall, this brand is one of those brands that just screams quality. Maybe a few years from now it can dethrone the #1 brand, but even if it does not, their quality and craftsmanship seem comparable enough. Solid 5 stars.

This bag is as good as they come. It’s one of the best hardside luggage bags you can find in this category. And while it may be a bit more expensive than your standard bag, it certainly makes up for it by giving a luggage bag made from high-quality materials that is loaded with so many modern features which makes you realize how much features you’ve been missing out all this time.

This is definitely one of the best buys out there. Never mind the price tag. This bag should last you a very long time.
