Today’s review is for a product called American Tourister Kids’ Disney Hardside Upright Luggage.

It’s a long name. But it’s descriptive, which is nice. I sometimes find myself having a love-hate relationship with this weird naming convention. Sometimes I find it annoying, other times, I find it informative.

If I think about it, I am more likely to click a product with a long name compared to something like “American Tourister Luggage Bag,” which is probably the main reason this naming convention exists.

But yes, before I go off-tangent again, let me start by saying that this review is meant to give you an in-depth look into this product.

I will give you all the information you need about this item. This can either help me convince you to buy the item, or maybe the opposite.

Apart from listing the good qualities of this bag, I will also mention the bad ones. I will highlight particular qualities of the bag that is noteworthy, be it good or bad.

Pros and Cons of American Tourister Kids’ Disney Hardside Upright Luggage

Prior to buying an item, no matter what it is, it helps to get an unbiased view of the item. If you could, try to gain insight of both the goods and the bads of the item. This is to prevent any buyer’s remorse once you’ve actually bought the item.

Granted, this American Tourister bag isn’t exactly expensive that it requires plenty of thinking about. Most would consider this a bag you can just buy and forget about. But that isn’t enough for me. Or you.

In this review, I am going to give you both the pros and cons of this product because we’re all suckers for good value products, aren’t we? Let’s start with the pros.

Pros

Fits The Carry-On Requirement

This is a pretty small bag but perfect for domestic travels. It fits the carry-on requirement which means no more checking in of your luggage for your travels.

While this isn’t exactly a notable feature, it is still worth mentioning since it’s also a light 4.75 pounds.

This is pretty impressive since it is a hardside bag with solid materials all around.

10-Year Warranty

This is one of the very few companies that offer 10-year warranty on their items. Rarely would you see a company give out this long a warranty.

Normally, you’d see warranty duration like this when dealing with heavy-duty machinery.

The fact that the warranty is here makes me surprisingly confident on its quality.

Word of advice – companies are able to afford this kind of warranty because let’s be honest here, only a few owners would actually go through the hassle of returning their damaged item.

Ten years is a long time and by the time it comes, Frozen (the design of this bag) is past its fame.

You probably already replaced it or threw it in the garbage bin, and forgot about the warranty.

I suggest that you make a reminder for this bag when you buy it.

Maybe put the warranty card inside the bag itself so you will never lose it.

Book Opening Case Inside The Bag

Since this is just a carry-on bag, it’s comfortably small in that it can also double as a school bag for your kids.

If you have a kid who brings a lot of books when going to school, this will be a great help for them.

Some say that carrying too heavy a bag could cost back pain to your kids, which you don’t want.

Gifting them a bag that has wheels on it, not to mention a Disney Frozen design, should definitely make your tiny princess pretty happy.

Cons

Weird Smell When First Opened

This complaint isn’t something new. In fact, I think majority of fabric items from Amazon suffers this problem in one way or another.

It has something to do with the chemical they are using to protect the item from harmful elements.

It just so happened that the chemical, when left to sit untouched inside the bag, trapped in closed air, gives off a strong chemical smell once it gets out.

This isn’t really a dealbreaker for most of us since the smell would likely go away when aired out. But this bad side of the item is still worth mentioning.

This is to give you a heads up of what to expect when you receive the item.

And no, I am not saying that all items will have this smell, too. In fact, only a small fraction of the items will, so keep that in mind.

Prone To Scratches

This is a hardside luggage. As such, you expect it to be sturdier than the average bag, and also heavier.

The material that is used as cover is definitely harder than your average bag. Unfortunately, even with all its hardness, it is still prone to scratches.

To be fair, this isn’t an exclusive issue with this bag. In fact, it’s one of most common issues present in all kinds of hardside luggage bags.

There’s even a separate industry catered to protecting your hardside luggage from scratches. You can search “luggage covers” on Amazon to get the latest offerings.

The Frozen design somewhat becomes useless with a cover though.

What you can do to protect this bag from scratches is to never check it in during your flight, which is doable since it’s only a carry-one bag.

Airline workers will throw luggage around like trash so as long as you avoid those, you can avoid scratches.

The Wheel Material Is Prone To Breakage

The wheel of this bag is made up of a transparent material that is a little brittle.

In my opinion, they should’ve opted with wheel material same as those used in skateboards.

They opt for something that complements the bag more instead, which I assume is for aesthetic purpose only.

While the wheel material is strong, it is still a type of material that is prone to shattering.

One single drop when the bag is full could be all what it takes to shatter the wheel.

This bag is rated highly on durability though so I’m pretty sure the wheels would last.

But from my experience with wheels like this, I think a case can be made here that they should’ve opted for stronger material instead.

American Tourister Kids’ Disney Hardside Upright Luggage Review: Quality Rating

There seems to be an epidemic of buyers expecting high-end quality from the cheapest of items. This came after the introduction of many alternative products on Amazon which allowed them to compare prices. Somehow, people expect to only get the best quality while paying for the lowest price possible.

This simply isn’t possible. Items that are cheap are cheap for a reason. Consumers that are expecting all the features from the cheapest items are being irrational, or at the very least, being cheapskates.

There’s a reason why quality vs quantity is a thing. Quality work fetches for higher prices. That’s just how it is, and there’s no circumventing that fact.

That being said, this Amazon Tourister Hardside Luggage Bag is actually pretty reasonably priced. This could be explained by them either skimping out on quality materials or operating on tiny margins.

Based on my research about this company, it seems like the answer is the latter. Since most of their sales are bought from Amazon, it allows them to cheap out on warehouse and inventory cost, directly passing on the savings as discount.

Overall, I’d definitely rate the quality of American Tourister higher than its price would seem to indicate. This is a strong 4.5 stars.

Review: Size Rating

This item is true to size. The dimensions posted on the page is right on the money. It’s a carry-on luggage, basically.

In my opinion, it looks a bit bulky for a kid but I supposed it’s alright because that is extra space that they could use to bring more items. They would certainly love the added space, I am sure of it.

To be honest, there’s really not much to talk about here. Its size is as advertised, no more, no less. It is as you’d expect it to be, size-wise.

The only real concern here is the size of the wheel enclosure which I think is larger than it needs to be. If it were a tad bit smaller, the saved space can be use as extra storage space.

4.5 stars.

American Tourister Kids’ Disney Hardside Upright Luggage:
Feature Rating

Most of the features of this bag, I’ve already talked about in the Pros section above. Near the end of the list, I actually found it hard to come up with features that is noteworthy.

To be frank, many of the features I’ve listed above are no-brainers. Basically, all luggage bags already have those features. Nonetheless, those are still features worth writing about since they are done with quality.

This bag is around $70. If you show me the features of this bag, I would’ve guessed around the price range, which means that you’re getting approximate what you pay for.

There’s really nothing noteworthy about this bag. And there’s nothing wrong with that. You can certainly do a lot worse than this for $70. It’s one of the best buys out there, if I may say so.

As I’ve already talked about above, there seems to be an epidemic of people wanting to squeeze all their money’s worth. This isn’t wrong, per se. But to expect every feature and the kitchen sink for a $70 bag? That’s unreasonable.

All I’m saying is you need to temper your expectations when it comes to the features of this bag. It gets the job done. And for a cheap price, too. 3.5 stars.

Brand Rating

American Tourister is quickly becoming my go-to choice when I want to have a product with a good balance between affordability and quality. This company seems to have found the right balance when it comes to this delicate matter.

With this brand, you get a bag that you know is quality but it’s almost like a bargain. No wonder it’s become Amazon’s best seller in several bag categories.

In fact, Amazon would probably show you this bag when you search for a closely related term. This is how you know American Tourister is doing something right. You know this company is here to stay. 4.5 stars.

Final Verdict On American Tourister Kids’ Disney Hardside Upright Luggage

When it comes to shopping for luggage bags, one of the first things you will notice is the price. Try to visit an actual store and see for yourself.

The price is literally the first thing you will consider. Well, unless money is not an issue. It’s as if we are programed to look for the best value, first and foremost.

This bag, American Tourister Frozen Hardside Luggage Bag, is certainly aware of this phenomena, and as such, it positions itself as a cheaper alternative to bigger and grander brands.

But beyond this competitive pricing, if you actually took the time to learn about the product, you will understand that there’s a lot more to it than just being the ‘cheaper alternative.’

This bag is actually very competently-made. You’d expect a quality like this from something that is priced way higher. The fact that it is available in this price range makes me somehow wary of this quality but I am familiar with American Tourister and its quality workmanship, so it’s all good. This is a bag worth getting, no doubt about it.
